Juneteenth
I cannot, in good conscience, celebrate Juneteenth.
Modern slavery is defined as when an individual is
exploited by others, for personal or commercial gain. Whether tricked, coerced,
or forced, they lose their freedom. This includes but is not limited to human
trafficking, forced labour and debt bondage. And, slavery is the ownership
of a person as property, especially in regards to their labour. Slavery
typically involves compulsory work, with the slave's location of work and
residence dictated by the party that holds them in bondage.
Human trafficking is the 2nd largest illegal
trade in the world. Second only to weapons and higher than drugs. What does HT include,
you ask? Sex Trafficking (think prostitutes. Most aren’t doing it of their own
free will; though some are), Child Sex Trafficking, Forced Labor Bonded Labor
or Debt Bondage (think a family “sells” their child for food to feed the rest
of the family), Domestic Servitude (think immigrant/illegal nannies/maids-those
who work in a private home), Forced Child Labor (think diamond/coal mines), Unlawful
Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers (think Taliban).
Until ALL peoples are free from slavery, how can we
celebrate? To each their own I guess.
